About the house

Who We Are

Casa Fluminense is an association established in 2013 by activists, researchers and citizens who share the vision of a socially just, democratic and sustainable Rio de Janeiro. To achieve this vision, Rio’s political agenda needs to be open to social participation and it must be aimed at its entire territory and population, i.e. at the 21 municipalities and 12 million inhabitants that make up the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region (RMRJ) – and not just mainly at the central areas of its capital city.

We function as the hub of a network of people and organizations dedicated to fostering shared initiatives aimed at promoting equality, democracy and sustainable development in the “metropolitan city” of Rio.

Network

Our associates – individuals – and partners – organizations and collectives – are, in fact, Casa Fluminense, and they define the thematic and regional focuses of our network’s actions. Casa Fluminense is always open to teaming up with organizations dedicated to a more just, democratic, and sustainable Rio. Take a look at who is already part of the network:

Organization

Casa Fluminense is structured as a non-profit civil society organization that is independent and non-partisan. Casa’s larger network is its key component and the planning cycles are open for all of its members to participate and have a say. The Executive Coordination, or Executive Nucleus, is responsible for supporting the activities inside the network. The Executive Coordination is supported by the Associates Council, which is elected every three years.

Transparency

After Casa Fluminense’s founding, the initial associates dedicated themselves to fleshing out a long-term strategic approach to carry out the network’s mission, and depended on the great energy of volunteer engagement. After this initial stage, the following institutional management dynamics count on annual planning and reporting cycles, with permanent channels that allow anyone in the network to share information and present suggestions on a day-to-day basis.
